It’s officially National Novel Writing Month!

It’s November 1, and if you’re a writer (or want to be) you know what that means—it’s time to get started on the novel you’ve been talking about penning. NaNoWriMo (the official parlance to those in the know) is a movement that prizes simply putting a pen down on paper (or fingers to keys, whatever your preference may be) and busting out 50,000 words by 11:59pm on November 30. If it sounds like a task of monumental proportions, you’re right—no one said it was going to be easy. But with a little help and encouragement, it’s more than possible.

“Too many people think they’re not a ‘creative type,’ but to be human is to be a ‘creative type,’" says Grant Faulkner, the Executive Director of NaNoWriMo (and recent Copperfield’s guest). "NaNoWriMo teaches you to believe that your story matters, to trust the gambols of your imagination, and to make the blank page a launching pad to explore new universes. That’s important because when we create, we cultivate meaning. Our stories remind us that we’re alive, and what being alive means.”

Signing up for a NaNoWriMo profile (it’s free!) keeps you accountable to your goal, as well as gaining you access to resources and weekly pep talks by published writers like Jenny Han, Alexander Chee, and Maggie Steifvater. There are also local events, such as meet-ups and workshops, to keep you motivated as you trudge along.

You can come to Copperfield's Petaluma on Saturday, November 19 for a free writing workshop with Bay Area writer Jordan Rosenfeld. She’ll be teaching particiants how to craft unique, compelling characters via point of view, using a combination of practical instruction, useful examples, and helpful exercises. You can save your spot here (open to all writers).

We’ll also be hosting several two-hour write-ins, where we supply snacks, beverages, and outlets to power your creativity while you write and discuss your challenges with likeminded writers in your community. Just show up ready to write at our Petaluma store on Wednesday, November 2 (6-8pm); Sunday, November 13 (11am-4pm); or Thursday, November 17 (6-8pm).

So what are you waiting for? You still need to write 1,667 words today! And don't worry—we'll be right there alongside you.
