Want to Play?

Meet and Greet with local educator Larkin O'Leary,  author of Want to Play?

Drop by our Montgomery Village store on Friday, March 29 from 11:00am - 12:00pm.

Want to Play? is a Children’s book that encourages conversations between, and acceptance of, all humans.

It is about a little girl who uses a tagline to help her find new friends at the park. The friends she meets in the story have a variety of different disabilities and the reader will watch the main character learn to play in new ways with each child’s different set of needs and abilities.

June goes to the park with her brother and mom only to find none of her friends are there. In her desire to enjoy the park with friends, she navigates children who look, act and communicate differently than her by using a phrase her mom taught her:  ‘When you’re not sure what to do, just smile, say hi and follow their lead.’

The surprise ending truly shows how connection is key to inclusion!

From the author: As a teacher, I found that one of the best ways children learn is through repetitive melodic phrases. Think of those annoying commercial songs that get stuck in your head and you can tell exactly what company they’re from!

A portion of the proceeds from every sale will be donated back to Common Ground Society

Author: A Sonoma County native, Larkin O'Leary has been a teacher in the Rincon Valley Union School District since 2004. Larkin has taught various grades from preschool to middle school until she resigned to care for her son in 2020. She’s currently serving as a Voting Member for the Sonoma CAC, and the Vice President Social Media Director of Common Ground Society as well as a presenter. James, their son, was born on St. Patrick’s day in 2014, is Larkin’s inspiration to create change. He is a goofy, fun-loving, friendly, sassy little guy who happens to have Down syndrome. He has a little sister, JuneBelle who we all adore. Larkin believes in the importance of inclusion for all people and is on a mission to change the narrative. Her tagline is, “you don’t know what you don’t know, until you know," which she explains in her TEDx Talk, "Fostering Differences on Common Ground."
