Commonwealth Review

In her latest novel, New York Times bestselling author Ann Patchett searingly reveals what happens to six kids and their four parents over five decades after an unexpected romance blows two families apart.

“Commonwealth,” Patchett’s eighth novel, opens with a John-Updike-like tease. “The christening party took a turn when Albert Cousins arrived with gin.” By evening’s end, Albert has kissed the baby’s mom, Beverly. Soon Albert and Beverly are hitched and their respective children, six in all, begin to forge new bonds as step-siblings.

Because who doesn't love Ann Patchett?

"If what a bookstore offers matters to you, then shop at a bookstore. If you feel that the experience of reading a book is valuable, then read a book. This is how we change the world: We grab hold of it. We change ourselves." These wise words come from Ann Patchett, whom you may know as the byline on many of your favorite novels and books of nonfiction: Commonwealth (her latest), as well as Bel Canto, State of Wonder, and my personal favorite Truth & Beauty, just to name a few.

FALL SEASON OF FEATURED AUTHORS ANNOUNCED

This is the time of the year where our friends accuse us of being name droppers. We can't help it. It's so exciting to work in the Events Department at Copperfield's in the Fall because all the work we've done to recruit authors to our area and stores shows. So every fall, Copperfield's events crew puts out a brochure describing the featured author events for the fall season. Let the name dropping begin....Mario Batali, Ann Patchett, Carl Hiaasen, Jane Alexander, Eowyn Ivey, Jay McInerney, Scott Westerfeld, Amor Towles, Dave Barry, Amy Stewart, Mac Barnett, Alexander Winstein, Ransom Riggs, and many many more are coming to Copperfield's this fall. And, we're still booking authors so there may be more surprises. In addition to these featured authors, we also have a calendar full of in-store author events for those who like discovering new and rising authors. As a booklover, you are invited to pick up a copy of the brochure this week in your North Bay Bohemian or in any of Copperfield's Books stores. And for updates for the rest of the season, check our monthly calendar online and in print in our stores.
